Everybody has that memory of the best game they have seen. You know, the one where someone pulls of something amazing at the last minute to win. Unfortunately, unless you were at one of the games below, your memory isn’t as cool, or shocking, or amazing, as those who were. In no meaningful order, below are what I believe to be the most spectacular finishes in College Sports History.
#1. Barton vs. Winona State
The Story: Barton is down by 7 points to Winona State. Winona state has won the last 50+ games they have played in, the longest winning streak in the history of Division II basketball, a winning streak that included winning last year’s championship and beating Barton. Barton has fewer than 1000 full time students, Winona State has 8000. Now watch the video…
#2. Boise State vs Oklahoma
The Story: Oklahoma doesn’t lose pretty much ever. Boise State puts up an incredibly valient effort, but with only a minute left, they throw an interception and Oklahoma intercepts, running it in for a touch down. With only a few econds left, in overtime, the amazing occurs.
#3. Duke vs Maryland
The Story: Duke has a great program, no doubt. Duke has a great coach, no doubt. But Maryland has a pretty good program themselves. They are down by 10 points with less than a minute left on the Terp’s Turf. They call this the “Miracle Minute”.
#4: Stanford vs. Cal
The Story: This game was so-over, that the marching band, the fans, and everyone else had stormed the field. Ooops.
#5: Duke vs Kentucky
The Story: Bear in mind that the score is already 102 to 103. Kentucky has a slight lead over the Devils in what was already being considered one of the best games of all time in College Basketball. With more lead changes than you could count on 4 hands, this game was as close as they come. And then came this.

What? No N.C. State vs. Houston for the NCAA title in 1983? Lame list without that one.
May 16th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
They are clearly playing in Maryland, not Cameron Indoor.
May 16th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
No love for Chris Webber’s last second timeout call?
May 16th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
No Rutgers vs Louisville? Come on!
May 16th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
2006 DIII Lacrosse national championship. Simply a phenomenal game. Salisbury had a ka-billion game winning streak and no one though Cortland had a chance. Sure, not the biggest stage compared to the games above but this was an amazing game.
Check out the ending: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXhQMfmDAIQ
May 16th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Dano, you are exactly right. No NCSU = buried.
May 16th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
What? No Nebraska vs. Miami in the 84 Orange Bowl. The two college games on this list didn’t mean anything.
May 16th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
What about that final 3-pointer that took KU into the overtime that won them this year’s title? Go Super Mario!
May 16th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
How about the DIII football game between Millsaps and Trinity? 17 Laterals for the win on the final play? Beat that!
May 16th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
So there are no exciting finishes in any other college sports? Just basketball and football? Lame.
May 16th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
This isn’t college, but this is the greatest finish in ANY sport I have ever seen. I was at the game at Texas Stadium. John Tyler High School vs. Plano East High School:

Shane Battier did not foul out in the Duke/Maryland game.
If you watch Part 2 he secures the win with a blocked shot at the end.
May 16th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
You know that listing from worst to best is much more interesting, don’t you?
May 16th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Two words: Texas, USC.
May 16th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
and no Illinois vs. Arizona in the NCAA tourney a few years ago?
May 16th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
The above are all good candidates, but:
Vince Young - Rose Bowl - 2006 National Championship. 4th and 5. Touchdown.
Greatest individual championship came performance ever. One of the greatest Championship games ever.
May 16th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
The Boise game was by far the greatest ending of the group. Your #1 was not even in the same ballpark.
May 16th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Wow. How can you not include West Virginia vs. Chris Paul’s Wake Forest in the NCAA Tourney a couple years ago. I believe it went into triple overtime with a West Virginia win.
Each team just kept hitting 3 pointer after 3 pointer.
The most exciting college basketball game I’ve ever seen.
May 16th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Same about a list that doesn’t include 2006 Rose Bowl between Texas and USC
May 16th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
How did you guys miss the App State vs. Michigan football game field goal block? Most unbelievable finish to a massive upset game
May 16th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
March 2, 1974: Carolina scores 8 points in 17 seconds to come from behind and beat Duke, in the days before a 3-point basket existed.
September 1, 2007: Appalachian State blocks two field goals, including Michigan’s potential gamewinner in the final seconds, to become the first ever Div II football team to beat a ranked Div I team since the divisions were created.
May 16th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
FSU at UVa 1995. FSU drives down the field only to be stopped shy of the goal line as time expires, giving UVa a 33-28 victory and FSU its first loss in conference since switching to the ACC.
May 16th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Rutgers vs Lousiville 2006
May 16th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Barton at Winona? WHAT?
Two Div II teams with one team down by 3 with 25 seconds left? Thats a “best finish” in the history of college sports?
Wow…just wow…

Dude, how could you leave off the 2006 Rose Bowl between Texas and USC for the BCS Championship? Considering the how high the stakes were and the quality of both teams (check out the number of current NFL players from the starting 44) plus that guy Vince Young running it in with :19 left for the go ahead score, this was the best finish bar none.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
No Illinois Vs. Arizona NCAA Elite 8
One of the best comebacks ever
May 16th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Umm, how about Boston College vs Miami. Flutie’s pass made this one of the most famous college football games ever. This list could be much better.

BYU vs. SMU in the 1980 Holiday Bowl. BYU, with Jim McMahon at the helm, came back from a 45-25 deficit in the final two minutes to beat Eric Dickerson and the Mustangs 45-46.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
2006 Rose Bowl, Texas vs. Southern Cal. With seconds remaining in the 4th quarter, Vince Young scrambles for a TD to beat the “greatest team of all time.”

You can tell this is outdated. KU-Memphis in the NCAA final.
Down 9 with 2 minutes. A 3 pointer to go overtime.
May 17th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Yep. This list has no cred without the NCSU v Houston game on it. Clearly not on point here. The whole of the sports community agrees on that game being in the top 3.
